Crew Boss (Single Resource) S-230 and Engine Boss S-231

On Monday April 7, 2008 @ 0800 hrs the Sycuan Fire Department Safety / Training Division in conjunction with South Western College will be presenting training on Crew Boss (Single Resource) and Engine Boss, S-230 & S-231. This is an NWCG Course designed to support the training requirements of the Wildland and Prescribed Fire Qualification Guide, PMS 310-1 and is also a requirement for Sycuan Fire Department Position Standards and Pay Scales.

THE COURSE LESSONS:

The S-230 course will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to perform tasks listed in NWCG Single Resource Boss: Crew (CRWB); Engine (ENGB); Dozer (DOZB); Tractor / Plow (TRPB); Felling (FELB); Firing (FIRB), as per PMS 311-13 specifically for Single Resource Boss: Crew (CRWB) Position Task Book (PTB), PMS 311-13. Students will also be able to describe the Crew Boss responsibilities prior to and during mobilization, on the incident, and during demobilization; identify the hazards and risks on various incidents and describe how to mitigate them; and describe tactics that are appropriate to various wildland fire situations and implement them through the chain of command.

The course consists of three days of classroom (24hrs) with multiple fire related classroom and field exercises (sand table).

The S-231 course will provide the student with the ability to perform the tasks of an Engine Boss (ENGB) in making the tactical decisions required to manage an engine and personnel safely on an incident.

The course consists of two days of classroom (16hrs) and is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains several exercises designed to facilitate group and class discussion.

For an individual to become fully qualified as an Crew Boss (Single Resource) and Engine Boss, the individual should meet the standards set forth in the Wildland Fire Qualifications Subsystem, PMS 310-1. The cadre has the latitude to rearrange the agenda to accommodate weather changes or travel times to the field exercise site while ensuring all course objectives are met.         

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is directed at individuals that have shown an interest, demonstrated the necessary skills, and met all the prerequisites, to include; established minimum training, skills and knowledge, experience and physical fitness requirement for the position of Crew Boss (Single Resource) and Engine Boss.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Tony Duprey has been a qualified Division Supervisor since 1983, a qualified Operations Section Chief since 1989 and a qualified Air Tactical Group Supervisor since 1993. He served as the team Air Tactical Group Supervisor on California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 for six years beginning in 1998.

Tony has served as cadre leader and instructor for wildland fire and leadership courses since 1979, instructing at the local, regional and national level.

Since his retirement, Tony has been instructing wildland fire and leadership courses for a variety of municipal and county fire agencies, the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs and CAL FIRE. For the last two fire seasons he has staffed the US Forest Service, Region 5 Firewatch Cobra based at Fox Tanker Base in Lancaster, Ca as the primary Air Tactical Group Supervisor and Module Leader.

Unit 0 – Introductory (Lecture)
Unit 1 – Preparation and Mobilization (Lecture)
Unit 2 – Assignment Preparation (Lecture)
Unit 3 – Tactics and Safety (Lecture)
Unit 4 – Off Line Duties (Lecture)
Unit 5 – Demobilization and Post Incident Responsibilities (Lecture)

PREREQUISITES:

Personnel who are Advanced Firefighter / Squad Boss (FFT1) qualified and have successfully completed The Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, S-290 course.

NOMINATION FORM:

All applicants are required by NWCG to complete the NWCG application and submit it to Chief Ruiz Sr. no later than February 19, 2008 @ 1600 hrs. DOWNLOAD nomination PDF form. NWCG applications can be found on the NWCG and NIFC web sites.

COURSE LOCATION AND START TIME:

Course will be held at the Sycuan Casino Upstairs Multi-Purpose Room. Class will be held Monday through Friday from 0800 till 1700 hrs.

ATTIRE:

Class "B" uniform.

COURSE TUITION:

The tuition for outside agencies is $150.00.  The cost for other courses may vary depending on the price of equipment, material, facilities, and instructors.
