SUBJECT: S-212 Wildland Fire Chain Saws "FALA" (Basic)

On Monday January 28th, 2008 @ 0800 hrs the Sycuan Fire Department Safety / Training Division in conjunction with South Western College will be presenting training on S-212 Wildland Fire Chain Saws “FALA”  This is an NWCG Basic Chainsaw Course designed to support the training requirements of the Wildland and Prescribed Fire Qualification Guide, PMS 310-1

THE COURSE LESSONS:

These course lessons provide instruction to the function, maintenance, capability and limitations and the use of internal combustion engine powered chain saws, and their tactical wildland fire application. Field Exercises support entry level training for firefighters with little or no previous experience in operating a chain saw by providing hands-on cutting experience in surroundings similar to fireline situations.

The courses will consist of three days of classroom (24hrs) and two days of field exercises (16hrs). The cadre has the latitude to rearrange the agenda to accommodate weather changes or travel times to the field exercise site while ensuring all course objectives are met.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is required training for all wildland fire chain saw operator position. It provides basic instruction in chain saw use, safety and for tactical fireline applications.

Unit 0 - Introduction (Lecture)
Unit 1 - Safety Requirements (Lecture)
Unit 2 - Chainsaw Maintenance and Operations (Lecture)
Unit 3 - Chainsaw Tasks and Techniques (Lecture)
Unit 4 - Fireline Location, Construction and Mop-up (Lecture)
Unit 4 - Fireline Location, Construction and Mop-up (Field) Singing Hills Area
Unit 5 - Field Practicum (Field) Singing Hills Area
Unit 5 - Field Practicum (Field) Chainsaw Maintenance / Singing Hills Area

PREREQUISITES:

S-110, S-130, S-190, I-100, IS-700 NIMS Awareness, current certification in Basic First Aid and CPR

NOMINATION FORM:

All applicants are required by NWCG to complete the NWCG application and submit it to Chief Ruiz Sr. no later than January 25, 2008. Attached you will find a nomination form. NWCG applications can be found on the NWCG and NIFC web sites.

COURSE LOCATION AND START TIME:

Course will be held at the Sycuan Fire Department Training Center Multi-Purpose Room. January 28-Feb. 1, 2008 from 0800 till 1500 hrs.

ATTIRE:

Class "B" uniform and all wildland Safety Equipment (PPE) are required, please be sure to include chainsaw chaps, gloves, earplugs and safety goggles.

COURSE TUITION:

The tuition for this course is $125.00.  The cost for other courses may vary depending on the price of equipment, material, facilities, and instructors.

Please submit check or money order with your nomination form or bring to class on your first day and make payable to Sycuan Fire Department Safety / Training Division, S-212 Course No. 08-001.
