Sycuan Golden Eagles Flycrew and HotShot Firefighters Assist City, Region, Nation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
An elite team of Sycuan Firefighters recently assisted firefighters from all over California as they battled the San Bernardino fires in Yucca Valley.
Designated as first responders, the Sycuan Fire Department Golden Eagles Flycrew is sponsored and funded by the SYCUAN BAND of THE KUMEYAAY NATION. The crew will continue to utilize the city’s new helicopter to attack wildland fires in San Diego County, California, and the nation. The Sycuan Fire Department, in conjunction with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, have also made the Sycuan Fire Department Golden Eagles Hotshots available to respond to any wildland fire incident in the City and County of San Diego without any cost recovery to the municipalities or rural departments

These highly trained, elite professionals include Native American firefighters from the Kumeyaay, Karuk, Lakota, Pima, Piaute, Shoshone, Cahuilla, Sub-Taino and Zapoteca indigenous tribal nations of North America. Sycuan’s contribution of manpower and expertise represents a partnership that is unique in California and the nation.
At a Welcome Barbeque at Montgomery Field Sycuan Tribal Chairman Daniel Tucker, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, San Diego’s new Fire Chief Tracy Jarman, and Sycuan Fire Chief Hank Murphy were on hand to recognize these firefighters. Flanked by about 40 of the Sycuan Fire Department Hotshots and Flycrew members who stood in front of the City’s new Bell 212 HP Helicopter, know as “Copter One,” the speakers commented on this unique partnership and the contribution to public safety.
Fire Chief Tracy Jarman noted that Sycuan’s donation represents $350,000 for this type of manpower, an annual cost that the cash-strapped city now does not have to budget for. “These firefighters are considered a national asset. They fly into the hottest, most dangerous situations to lead the initial attack in a fire zone. They stay until the job is done.”
“This is the 4th year that Sycuan has donated members of its Golden Eagles Flycrew and Hotshot crews to respond to fires in the city and region,” Mayor Jerry Sanders said. “We deeply appreciate this generosity.”
Sycuan Chairman Daniel Tucker said, “I would like to thank Mayor Sanders for his strong and effective leadership at this crucial point in San Diego history. Sycuan is proud to contribute these young men and women’s firefighting experience to form this unique partnership.”
