SYCUAN GOLDEN EAGLES FUELS CREW

Sycuan Fire Department Air and Wildland Division Golden Eagles Fuels Crew
Crew Captain: CAPT. JOSE DEZA
A BRIEF HISTORY:
The Sycuan Fire Department Golden Eagles Fuels Crew was established in October of 2007 after acquiring a contract with San Diego City, Open Spaces. The contract called for 16 crew members to perform fuel reduction in canyons adjacent to structures with potential hazards in areas within the San Diego City limits.
The crew was initially composed of the Golden Eagles Interagency Hotshots and Fly Crew members. When Sycuan Fire Department renewed their contract in July of 2008, a new crew was reconfigured by using existing well seasoned leaders and Sycuan Wildland Fire academy graduates.
During the 2008 season, an agreement was established between Sycuan Fire Department, San Diego Fire and Rescue and the City of San Diego Open Spaces for the Golden Eagles Fuels Crew to divide into two pre-assigned crews of 10 fire fighters in the event of a medium or high severity wildland fire incident.
One crew would continue to perform fuel reduction while the other would respond to the assigned fire incident. This situation only applies to incidents within the city limits at no cost to the City of San Diego or San Diego Fire and Rescue. This allows the Golden Eagles Fuels Crew to continue to serve and protect the community and in addition gain fire experience.
